Voted the best place to work

"When a financial institution wins a bevy of awards, especially awards based on employee feedback, you'd have to say they are doing something right. That’s what is happening right now at Shell Federal Credit Union (Deer Park, Texas).

According to Traci Gianukos, Vice President of Marketing, Shell FCU continues to win multiple awards and recognition as a great place to work, all based on employee surveys and feedback.

For example, the credit union has made the Houston Chronicle’s list of “Top Workplaces in Houston” for eight consecutive years. It also clinched 2018’s number one top workplace among mid-sized organizations.

Additionally, the credit union earned the number six spot on the Houston Business Journal’s list of “Best Places to Work.”

So why are they getting all these awards?

Gianukos says it comes down to providing a positive workplace for all.  “It all goes back to staying positive and having the right attitude. A happy employee translates to a happy member, which reflects in the service we give.”

CEO Started as a Teller

Another advantage the credit union has is their CEO.

“Our CEO Jose Rodriguez actually started here 25 years ago as a teller. He worked his way up and is an inspiration to all our employees.”

Having a leader who intimately understands the inner workings of all aspects of the credit union is important to establishing cohesiveness with his staff. “He’s not the stand-offish type of CEO.  Instead, he makes a point to go to every new hire orientation and meet with all employees regularly through branch and department visits. You can tell he truly cares about everyone at the credit union.”

So in addition to being involved in strategic, big picture planning, Rodriguez is part of day-to-day operations, which is uplifting and keeps employee engagement high.

Beyond having a strong CEO, the company invests in its staff by partnering with Discover Leadership Training, which is a leadership training program out of Houston that offers multiple leadership courses.

Shell FCU invests in a four-day program located at Discover Leadership and a two-day in-house program that is conducted by their own Learning and Development team.

“The training focus is on positivity and the outcome for the day.  Not to focus on yesterday, but what is presently happening.  Each day is a new day.”

Gianukos says Discover Leadership Training and the “Game Changer” program have been very inspirational, and deliver an entire philosophy about how you want to live your life. “And it is not just at work, but also how you want to live your personal life. Employees are taught that things are going to happen that are out of our control.  But you learn how to handle it and move on.”

The two-day classroom style Game Changer training is extremely interactive and includes plenty of role playing. “Each employee leaves training with something different.”

The employee also has his or her own set of goals, and is taught how to reach those goals. “I’ve seen employees enter the training as extremely shy people, then emerge and want to contribute and come out of their shell.

“At Shell FCU we strive for a culture of positivity and it starts at the top with our Management team who want to see our employees continue to grow and succeed. We are always looking to best our best as a credit union. We are all on the same team.”
